Pit bulls happen to be one of the most maligned dog breeds in the world and are feared all over the world to the point of being banned in many cities in the United States. All of this leads to a lot of controversy surrounding the breed. Read on to bust several pitbull myths that are commonly perceived to be true.
Pit bulls are vicious
This is one of the pitbull myths that is partially true. There has been a preconceived notion among people that pit bulls are vicious by nature and they tend to attack suddenly whenever they can. While it is true that pit bulls have been historically bred underground for illegal fights, not all pit bulls are the same. Many pit bulls are bred solely for companionship. Pit bulls do have a natural keenness to be aggressive towards other dogs, but they are known to be extremely gentle towards their owners and handlers. With the proper training and breeding, pit bulls can be very friendly, just like any other breed of dog.
Pit bulls should not be allowed near children
This one is arguably one of the most blatant pitbull myths you will encounter! If you have a family-reared pit bull, it will have a high tolerance towards children, and they love interacting with kids. They are known to be very protective of the children around them and do not mind even being poked and prodded by little children.
Pit bulls are behind the most canine attacks
False! It is not unlikely that you have read “facts” which claim that pit bulls are known to be responsible for more than half of canine caused deaths. This is far from true as it is very hard to distinguish between a pit bull that has been raised for fighting and an American pit bull raised for companionship. All of those made up stats try to lump up fighting dogs into the same breed and classify them as dangerous which is entirely false as those reports fail to differentiate between the breeds of pit bulls.
Pit bulls make bad guard dogs
This is one of those gray pitbull myths that is partly true. A pit bull’s ability to protect its owners is entirely dependent on how the dog is bred. There are pit bulls that are caring and friendly but know how to defend when in danger. These dogs can protect their owners and homes very aggressively and chase away trespassers while other pit bulls might be too docile and friendly, even towards strangers. A dog’s behavior is affected by the owner, and depending on how you treat and raise your dog, it will respond accordingly.
Many myths surround pit bulls due to the popular images of them being fierce and aggressive. But just like every other breed of dog, they are loving and caring if you raise them right, they can become extremely loyal companions!
